LeGant is a trademark used by Montgomery Ward department stores for watches produced under contract for sale in their chain.
Montgomery Ward had a long tradition of marketing private label watches, but it also sold some very high end brands.
Montgomery Ward was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872. After working several years as a travelling salesman among rural customers, Ward conceived of the idea of a dry goods mail-order business in Chicago, Illinois. His observed that rural customers often wanted goods only readily available in the city, and he came up with a plan to market goods directory to the consumer cutting out the middle men, offering a wide selection of products for a good price that could be ordered and picked up from the nearest train station. Thus started an era of mail order goods and by 1883, the company's catalog, which became popularly known as the "Wish Book", had grown to 240 pages and 10,000 items. Montgomery Ward opened it's first retail outlet in 1926 and grew from there. By the 1940s, exclusive brands including Patek Philippe watches were sold in it's wishbook. Unfortunately, after WW2 Mongomery Wards started it's decline, and by the 1970s when this watch label was produced, Montgomery Ward was nearing it's end. The label would be sold to Seiko in the 1990s, and by the year 2000, Montgomery Ward and LeGant was no more.
